Proposal 3 : Color the World

Title
Color the World

Background
Every one of us plays a role in this world. Our actions, our identity determines how the future will be shaped. We are like a huge community that keeps contributing and changing the world, for better or worse. It's not just the government, researchers, or designers that are capable of making an impact, a change to people's lives, or perception. How many times do you think your life may had an effect on others'?

Problem Identification
The message 'We are the future' needs to be screamed as loud as possible. People are unaware of the fact that everything we do will determine the future and create a world like how it is today. We need to connect people. Wake them up and let them know that our relation between each other is stronger than we thought. That everything we do will affect each other, good or bad, a lot or by the tiniest amount.

Aim & Objective
- To connect people, unite them, build a sense of community
- To make them realize that all of us, our decisions our actions will affect everyone's life and the world
- To 'capture' people and 'paint' the world with their colors

Motivation
A lot of people are lost in this world. By lost, I mean in a lot of ways. Not knowing what they're supposed to do. Lost in a virtual online gaming world. Lost in a social network like Facebook. Lost in thinking that they are alone in this world. They are so lost that they don't see that although it is true we roll along when the world spins, at the same time the world changes as we live our daily lives. My motivation is to wake everybody up ( including myself ) and bringing all of us together to realize our huge part in this world.

Ideation and Concept
The audience will have to stand in front of the webcam. When motion is detected, the application will start to countdown and take a picture. From the captured image, three colors will be picked ( brightest, mid, lowest ). These colors will then be used to compose and color a random image representing the world ( tree, beach, mountains, etc ). The final result will be shown on an extended display ( a projection screen ). When the application is idle ( no motion detected/no user participating ), the projection screen will show a gallery of all the taken pictures with results.

Another approach is to make the installation real-time. The webcam will capture a livefeed, taking colors from the input and always changing/coloring images.

Target Audience
Those who are concern of themselves and/or the world ( Everyone )

Design Approach
Actionscript 3.0 for programming bitmaps capture and image composition. Webcam for motion detection, also for image capturing. LCD Display and medium-size projection
- Visual : Random pictures of scenery, nature
- Audio : According to the image ( e.g : waves, seagulls for image of beaches )

Proposal 2 : MadShock

Title
MadShock

Background
We all know for a fact that everybody gets mad. That emotion of being out of control and feeling like you wanna punch everyone you come across is called 'anger'. Anger is triggered when we get hurt, or pissed off, when someone do or say something against our likings, when things don't go the way we planned, easier said a lot of things can tick us off. For me on my daily basis, heavy traffic does that but it's nothing good music can't overcome. Although how easily we become angered by certain things varies among each of us and how we express our anger are also different.

Problem Identification
Everybody hates getting scold at, or having someone being a jerk during one whole lecture for no reason. That's because anger can hurt the people around us. The issue here is not many of
these 'hot-tempered people' are aware of this fact. Pain and problems are part of our daily life, we need to live with it and solve our problems.

Aim & Objective
-
To give an image how anger can hurt other people ( literally )
- To make hot-headed people repent and change for the better ( sounds funny but might be possible )
- To study how different people react to pain ( facts I found online proved that some people actually enjoy pain -_- most of the stories are found are sex-related so I won't link here >.< )

Motivation
I used to get mad easily before ( my girlfriend being my favorite victim >.< ) and I bet we all have met someone in our who always go insane over the smallest things ( for me it was my brother - one time, he used to punch us; his little brothers when we suck at a video game but he got married and is a better person now xD ). So yeah, I pretty much knows how it feels to be the jerk and the one being 'jerked' at xD I'm sure we all do. When you changed to be more matured and better, you realized some things you did back then are so stupid and pointless ( fun nonetheless haha ). So I'm hoping to move and open some eyes of those who are jus
t so blind by their pure sheer irritating madness, hurting people around them day by day.

Ideation and Concept
There will be two platforms, one for the touch sensing and the other for transmitting electric shock ( pain ). This installation functions as a display of how our anger can hurt other people.
When a person punches ( provide touch ) the touch sensor ( covered with fabric ), electric shock will be sent to the person on the other end. How high the voltage depends on how high the pressure received on the touch sensor.

Target Audience
Hot-tempered people and friends ( everyone but definitely not senior people, might get a heart attack through the shock >.< )

References

PainStation

proof that some people have fun with pain that someone decided to make a game using pain.
Oh and those people in Jackass. sick

Analog Fabric Joypad

in this instructable, the author used touch for a different purpose. still it detects pressure and surely its function can be directed to a different use.

Design Approach
Two platform programmed using Processing ( for touch sensing ) and Arduino ( for transmitting data + electric waves ).
- Might be visual, displays calmness screensaver-like image initially then change to chaotic when touch is detected
- Blue/green ( calm ), red ( mad )

Proposal 1 : One Voice

Title
One Voice

Background
Racism has been a huge issue around the world including Malaysia. With the creation of new media like social networks ( YouTube, Facebook ), new cases of race hate has been spreading like wildfire and exposed widely to the public.

Problem Identification
Each day through the usage of new media, more and more racial hate display are made, spawning new cases of racism at a high rate which led a number of Malaysian to believe that digital media is a form / medium that will only cause more damage to our multi-race community especially the Internet.

Aim & Objective
- To create unity among races through new media
- To accumulate comments/feedback from users on racism
- To evaluate users response when they are given the opportunity to make statements anonymously

Motivation
I've always being one to stand against racism. I know for a fact it's not possible to get rid of its existence completely. It's been around for ages. It's stupid ( not to mention stereotyping is damn annoying ) and I think we all need to play our part in solving this huge issue. I'm very glad that I have the chance to support this cause.

Ideation and Concept
Users will be asked to submit input on anything. What they want, what they like, what they believe in, their hopes and dreams, anything. They also have to submit their race. This will be captured by a tablet which will recognize and convert the user handwriting into text. A big screen next to the input machine will display submitted entries which are sorted by keywords/tags. Tags will be chosen randomly based on similar keywords found in the entries.

Target Audience
Everyone

Design Approach
Mostly ActionScript 3.0 ( except for the handwriting text-recognition part, will probably need to integrate with a third-party software ). A tablet that supports this function. A medium-size projection as gallery display.
- Friendly, not too chaotic visuals
- Colors that whispers unity
- Cheerful but calm background music ( good example is Wii Sports Resort - Main Menu* )

Initial Proposal

I could recall a statement one of my lecturers ( can't remember who though ) made from my previous semester, the biggest difference between an artist and a designer is that an artist create their art to convey a message while designers create works that has specific functions ( usually to meet user requirements ). Well, I guess this mindset isn't always valid.

I've thought of 3 initial projects, which I thought would be very 'functional' to specific user group. I didn't think of the message behind these ideas. Of course to no surprise, all 3 proposal got rejected xD

It was only after hearing Mr Kok Yoong's response to my project direction that it hit me. Those ideas were boring as hell and soooooooooo lame. I totally agree with him when he said "I bet you will lose interest doing these projects halfway"

So I went back home, brainstormed for a few hours, played a couple rounds of Dota >.<, then back to the drawing board again and came out with 3 new ideas. Alhamdulillah I've got Mr Ky's and Madam Forest's approval :)

P/S : I dont know why it was even necessary to write a lame introduction -_-
